Looks like all the back pressure created by the restriction help the poor thing keep up the compression, even-though the piston is now sized for a TY-70.

Polished combustion chamber, anyone?

[TY80Stuff037_zps6fa20883]

[TY80Stuff038_zpsea6ba7fc]

The poor lighting does not do the work justice, but trust me the chamber is very shiny! [icon10]

More to come.... [naughty]

Final step.  I used a Scotchbrite strip wedged in a universal grinder arbor to polish the exhaust port today -

[TY80Stuff047_zpsd0d9bd9d]

[TY80Stuff046_zps12cc3fc7]

This was after only about 3 minutes of polishing -

[TY80Stuff048_zpsec65d7a4]

Another 2 Tecates, and the port was as shiny as the combustion chamber. No pics, the batteries in the camera died after that pic was taken. [bluduh]

Tomorrow: Reassembly. Stay tuned! [naughty]

Oh yes. I could not wait to assemble the bike this morning. I started at 8:30am while the temperature was still below freezing. Wossner piston installed, fresh cylinder installed -

[TY80Stuff049_zps20c183b0]

After the cylinder head and exhaust pipe were bolted back up, I went to the box of parts to get the reed cage gasket only to find it MIA. [puzzled] After 45 minutes of searching, I finally gave up and got out my favorite gasket-making material to fab up a reed cage gasket. The gasket really did get cleaned up after the final pic, I just did not photo document the reassembly very well. I was more eager to hear it run than take lots of photos -

[TY80Stuff050_zps2ba0015f]

[TY80Stuff051_zps5791383a]

[TY80Stuff052_zps598cb00e]

It did not take long after that. First fire!

[TY80Stuff053_zpsf3308473]

Wow, does this thing sound and run different. It sounds more like an air-cooled YZ80 now even with it's relatively mild mods. [eekers] I ran it through several heat-up and cool-down cycles, rode it around the block once, and then re-torqued the head. It's much happier now, even with it's ghey cylinder head color -

[TY80Stuff054_zpse0b14a63]

[TY80Stuff055_zpsba2fada2]

Next step - Getting the ignition up to snuff, then final tuning before the MWVTA season starts in April. More to come! [naughty]

[bawl] Brewtus, you know that hydraulic clutch bumps you into the support class.    [eek]

That POS Chinese hydraulic clutch may not stay on, either.  Besides, I don't remember seeing anything against hydraulic clutches in MWVTA.  It's still air-cooled, twin-shocked, and drum-braked!   [confused]

On to The Acid Test. Rode the 80 at SanYo yesterday. It would climb Dirt Hill! [clap]

[SanYsidro2014033_zps45d59ce0]

And of course go down it..[lol8]

[SanYsidro2014032_zpseb5862f9]

Bad thing is, it would not run above 1/2 throttle. It would just shut down. It actually stalled on the way back to the parking lot from Dirt Hill. To be honest, I was terrified that I had seized it already, although it had not detonated even once on the hill or on the trail. I rushed home from work today, pulled the cylinder head and....

Nothing. It had not seized. [knary]

It had run very hot out at SanYo though. Hmmmm, could the exhaust pipe be as clogged as the exhaust port had been? I removed the pipe, and it was....heavy. Really heavy. Really, really heavy. "Good going, ya dork", I thought to meself. "Hot rod the engine and run it through a clogged pipe. Genius!" [bluduh]

Time to take care of that little problem! [naughty]

[TY80Stuff058_zps52b0b8a6]

[TY80Stuff057_zpsbab534f1]

When the pipe got good and skin-melting hot, it smoked worse than a coal-burning locomotive. For a very long time in fact. Yeah, the pipe was full. I don't think I got it all, either. I can see this will be a week-long progress. If the neighbors don't call the Fire Department first... [eek7]

More to come.... [icon10]

Day 2 of Smokin' the Pipe -

[TY80Stuff059_zpsc3d83f38]

Notice the pipe burning cherry-red at the expansion chamber junction with the head pipe. It started burning like that halfway up the head pipe, and I kept it going with the oxygen until it reached the tail pipe. Really smoked today, and threw sparks occasionally! [naughty] I think we're clean.

After the pipe cooled, I heard something rattling around inside the pipe. I finally worked the culprit out of the headpipe -

[TY80Stuff062_zps7e1fb46a]

Oops! Whass' that??? [uhoh2] I shined a flashlight down the tailpipe, and it revealed a hole in the rearmost baffle in the chamber roughly the same shape as the slag. I guess it will be louder now. [lol8]

Bottom line, it is significantly lighter than it was before. It outweighed the spare pipe I had by quite a bit, but I did not weigh the pipe before I started. I did weigh it afterward, though. First off, the "calibration". The scale with no weight on it -

[TY80Stuff068_zps8928336d]

Hmm, 'bout a pound light. Now the Team pipe -

[TY80Stuff065_zpsee0b51cc]

[TY80Stuff066_zps9b85815a]

So that's what, 3lbs? Next up, the spare pipe -

[TY80Stuff063_zps4a8cefa9]

[TY80Stuff067_zpsc7483137]

Well then. Over 5lbs, and this was the "light" pipe of the two when I began. I regret not weighing the Team pipe before I started this nonsense Oh well....

Coming up...paint the pipe, reinstall, test, tune, argue about the legality of the hydraulic clutch, buffoonery. In that order. Stay tuned! [deal]

Wow, time's running out. 2 weeks until the MWVTA opener in SanYo. Guess I'd better get busy on this pile. [lol8]

I removed the carb this morning, opened 'er up, and found....a bit of water in the bowl, and crud around the needle jet -

[TY80Stuff_zps786621f9]

Hmm, maybe I should look at this carb more often than once every 5 years. [shog] I checked the main jet size - 76. Yeeeah, a bit lean. I guess that when Bob jetted it for 10,000ft 7 years ago, the engine was already getting weak. I pulled out the carb for my personal TY since it was already cleaned and had a fresh gasket kit installed, checked the main jet - 84, much better since the OE jetting was 86. Installed the carb, and WOW!!!!! MUCH better!!!! [clap] She runs very, VERY well now. [icon10]

MWVTA, here we come!!! [naughty]

With the 80 running so good it will be interesting to see if you goof balls can handle the power.  [confused]  Going to take bets which one loops it first, cold beer to the winner. [biggrin]

Opening round, as told by The League -

The weekend started off well. I dragged old OJ off the porch to act as a work mule this weekend -

[MWVTA2014025_zps73ac645f]

Hmmm, I had not started, washed, nor even paid any attention to the old crock since Roswell last November. Some Haystack mud still clinged to the skidplate -

[MWVTA2014027_zps9a571b47]

Loading up, rarin' to go!!!

[MWVTA2014026_zps1f3852ae]

Arrive, do some cleanup on the loop and sections, hang out with old friends, and...

Campfire!!! [icon10]

[MWVTA2014028_zpsacfff39f]

Got up Saturday morning to discover a flat tire on the Team bike. [eek7]

I had noticed it the night before, and texted Hammer to save the day. He came through with a new tube, installed right before the horn sounded for Saturday's Trial. Not a good way to start the day -

[MWVTA2014029_zps08dc48e7]

Stupid cheap-assed Chen Shin tubes really ought to last more than 5 years anyway. I'm gonna fire off an angry e-mail.... [bluduh]

[MWVTA2014030_zpsdca03773]

The Team bike did get a new plate just for this season, courtesy of The Hammer -

[MWVTA2014031_zps6bc7dada]

The League. 'Nuff said! [naughty]

Signup, with an old twist -

[MWVTA2014032_zpseffd1ceb]

Yup, Hammer sportin' da dreads!! [lol8]

Day One. Some Carnage.

We are not even to our first section when this happens to Yosemite's TY -

[MWVTA2014033_zps6c770b7e]

[MWVTA2014034_zpsdd4ce350]

Yowza! A quickie fix, and we are on our way to our first section! Go get 'em!!!

[MWVTA2014037_zps7c253c93]

Oh, this is gonna be a long day!!! [lol8]

Ah, young love between TY80's -

[MWVTA2014067_zps86deb85e]

Hey baby! Remember when we did this on the way to Sturgis on our first TY80?

[MWVTA2014064_zps2479b473]

[lol8]

Day one ended with a killer feed put on by Old Geezer and his teenage bride [nono], with the storms moving in. Wind, rain, hail, sleet, locusts, plague, et al came in Saturday evening. After the worst part had moved on, it was an early night for the campfire kids.

Sunday. More Carnage!!

The wind had blown hard all night, but at least it rained too! [lol8] We're not afraid, it's time to go ride!!

Oh wait, a flat on Yosemite's bike, and the pipe had come adrift on the Team TY!! [eek7]

The Fred Flintstone tools did not work on the pipe -

[MWVTA2014087_zpse8b060ae]

[MWVTA2014088_zps07eda7e2]

So Yosemite Matt went back to camp for some slime and tools. I did not get a shot of Yosemite sliming the rear tire of his TY, but did get a shot of Hammer fixing the Team TY -

[MWVTA2014099_zpsc0d87b53]

Gonna be a long day.... [eek7] [lol8]

We had an interloper join in on the TY festivities. JB Brown -

Hey Yosemite! How well does that bike run again? -

[MWVTA2014093_zpsb50e3ec4]

[lol8]

We fought rain, hail, and snow all day long. This loomed on the horizon most of the day -

[MWVTA2014116_zpsac811c42]

[MWVTA2014115_zps8529d5af]

But we don't care, for we are...

The League!!

[MWVTA2014075_zps056f7cfd]

[MWVTA2014076_zpscfd46915]

[naughty]

At the end of the day, I had a really bad get-off on the loop to section 8. Over the bars, bashed in the fuel tank, and broke a fin off of the new cylinder head -

[MWVTA2014117_zpsdef3b298]

[bncry]

The nasty weather continued on the way home, but at least it was a tail wind!! [lol8]

[MWVTA2014118_zpse97bcc6a]

[MWVTA2014119_zps809b13fc]

Battered, bruised, and scarred, The League will be back!

[MWVTA2014120_zps6835920c]

More to come... [naughty]
