OK I'll admit I'm jumping the gun a bit here. The last MWVTA round we rode has not been posted yet, but at least there was more carnage among 2 ty80's. The Team bike had the silencer try it's best to come adrift -

[MWVTA2014148_zps9f49c9ef]

[TY80Stuff070_zpsf6c2101c]

[TY80Stuff071_zpsb495400f]

I thought "why bother? I have another exhaust from my personal bike."

Time for another smoke-out!! [lol8]

[TY80Stuff069_zpsc08dfd47]

[TY80Stuff084_zps53a710a0]

After screwing around with that for an hour, it was apparent that the rear part of the pipe was clogged pretty damn good. It would barely flow air out of the pipe, holding an air nozzle at the front. Felt like an asthmatic granny wheezing on your palm out of the silencer. Not good.

Time to grind and weld -

[TY80Stuff073_zps364316f7]

[TY80Stuff075_zpsbda1134c]

Oh yeah, and slather my horrid welds in paint. Need more welding practice..... [shog]

I did discover this hillbilly silencer insert in the pipe of my personal TY. A piece of pipe, perforated with a drill, slop-welded (yes, worse than my welds) to an endcap, covered in packing material. The OE TY80 piece is on the left -

[TY80Stuff076_zps7d71511f]

[TY80Stuff077_zpsa07dece8]

[TY80Stuff078_zpsf4cd315f]

Aw, what the hell. Let's give it a go. Freshly painted and installed -

[TY80Stuff080_zpsa5652818]

[TY80Stuff081_zps5bdd302f]

No more exhaust leaks, and sounds.....

Loud.

Sorta.

Who cares. It is sealed and works. [lol8]

More to come..... [naughty]

I'm definitely interested in *this* part of the story ;-) with an eye to installing a juice clutch on the Scorpa Long Ride.

Update:

Out with the crap -

[TY80Stuff087_zpsb0972c2d]

In with the good -

[TY80Stuff089_zpsafb4aee5]

[TY80Stuff090_zpsaa1d81dd]

[TY80Stuff088_zps5e3769ba]

All I can say is WOW, what a difference real quality makes. The Magura works so much better than the cheap Chinese crap does it's not even close to a fair comparison. The Magura was not inexpensive, but true quality rarely is.

Goodbye, cheap Chinese s*it -

[TY80Stuff094_zps0129ff5b]

And good riddance!!! [fuck]

[TY80Stuff095_zps80b69eb4]

More to come....... [icon10]

So, I've been following a thread on ADV recently.

This is bad.

Some things that I have run across from a couple of folks whom I have some respect for, on the "Altering Combustion Chamber (Head) Profiles -

Oklahoma's Chris Johnson -

Clean off both surfaces with Scotchbrite pad, then and coat both surfaces with a very thin layer of silicone 1 and immediately assemble, torque, and let stand a hour at least. Ride the bike to directly experience what 'shaving' of an amount equal to gasket thickness will do. If you like it, you can forgo shaving and just leave the gasket out.

I ran my TY350s in the `80 with no head gaskets, no problems.

And Jon Stoodley -

and use a copper gasket of .003" thickness. You can buy copper sheets at hobby stores

Well now. Johnson ran with no gaskets, and Stoodley ran paper-thin (literally) copper gaskets on much-modified TY engines. I'm willing to mod the Team TY, so let's go!! [icon10]

The Great .003" Copper Foil Purchasing Crusade ended in failure today. No hobby stores, metal supply houses, or even the dreaded Evil Empire (Wally Whirled) had it. Grainger advertised it, but was closed today. I did buy some .008" sheet from a supply house, but did not have the capability to correctly work it here at the house -

[TY80Stuff096_zps36ef626c]

I drank a beer (big shock), and contemplated my options. The MWVTA event is next weekend. Sure would like to have a little extra "pop" to take on the big bikes. Hmmmm...

Beer can.

Wait a minute..... [naughty]

[TY80Stuff099_zps1bc02a13]

Just how thick is a Tecate beer can?

[TY80Stuff107_zps2c0dcf19]

[clap]

Harebrained idea.....ON!!

[TY80Stuff100_zps43997ee5]

[TY80Stuff102_zps53c1f484]

[TY80Stuff103_zpsdbbc6b72]

[TY80Stuff104_zps55268361]

I coated the beer can gasket with copper-spray-gasket -

[TY80Stuff108_zps6801864f]

And installed it. [lol8]

[TY80Stuff111_zps68d888eb]

I ran the engine through 3 heat-and-cooling cycles, then checked the temps -

[TY80Stuff119_zpsfd3f025e]

[TY80Stuff120_zpsca1ba9bf]

And re-torqued -

[TY80Stuff121_zps51200cd0]

The 80 sounds a bit meaner now what with .018" increase in static compression? Shee-yeah! [thumb]

Will it work? Dunno. We'll find out next weekend.

More.

To.

Come. [naughty]

I rode 4 events. Unfortunately it was in two classes because I believed the hype about expert being too hard for a little bike. Ronnie is toast next year once I finish up the supercharger on Pinkie.
